Microsoft (MSFT) and Verizon (VZ) are gearing up for a battle with Apple (AAPL). According to the Wall Street Journal the two companies are in talks to launch a touchscreen smartphone to compete with iPhone.Microsoft executives involved with the project codenamed "Pink"  are hoping it will enable the company to extend the reach of its Windows Mobile operating system. Meanwhile Verizon is hoping to take on AT&T (T) in the smartphone category.
